Elizabeth Tanner is no Tinkerbell, and her life is no fairy tale. Broke and drowning in student loans, the one thing she wants more than anything is a scholarship from the Trinity Foundation. But after the ancient Irish text she's studying turns out to be more than just a book, she becomes their prisoner instead. And when Trinity reveals Elizabeth is half-Fae, she finds herself at the center of a plot to save the magical races of Ireland from a brutal civil war.

As Commander of Trinity's elite warriors, Finn O'Connell isn't used to having his authority challenged. He doesn't know whether to punish or protect the infuriating young woman in his custody. When he discovers the Dark Fae want to use Elizabeth's abilities to control the source of all power in the universe, he'll risk everything to help her.

At the mercy of Trinity and enslaved to the Dark Fae, Elizabeth finds herself alone on the wrong side of an Irish myth thousands of years in the making. Refusing to be a pawn in their game, Elizabeth has to fight her way back to the man she loves, but to do so, she must wage her own war against the magic that binds her.

Not sure yet if this rates a 3 star or 4 star, my reason, the heroine. Come on, is she a wimpy girly-girl, or someone gaining strength thru learning her powers? Most of the time she acts as if she has no clue of what is happening around her, (if someone ordered your beating, you sure as heck wouldn't be sitting down to dinner with them). And, for a grad student in Celtic studies she is clueless! Please, give this woman some brains. Hope the next book works the story line in a more entertaining manner.

Through The Veil Aisling Chronicles Book 1 eBook Colleen Halverson Reviews

There are better books out there if you are looking to kill (and enjoy) a few hours. The heroine was one of the most annoying characters that I have ever had the misfortune to read. The relationship between the heroine and the hero goes from zero to sixty with no tension, teasing or heat. You never really get why they are attracted to each other. Because of that you just don't really care about them as a couple. Ms Halverson was overly ambitious for a first novel. Too many characters and sub plots for full development. Her story and her characters got away from her. I will not carry on with this series.
I really wanted to like this, but I just can't get on board with the Finn/Elizabeth relationship. He literally allows her to be beaten almost to death, imprisoned, and sold off like chattel but we're still supposed to like this guy and be okay with them ending up together.

Nope.
This is a fantastic read. The characters are well-rounded and realistic. The dialogue is snappy, fast-moving and honest. Page one grabbed me and wouldn't let go. I fell in lust with Finn only a few pages in and omg... the scenes where Finn and Elizabeth... umph... cold shower time. Usually, when you read a fantasy romance, you get one or the other, in this book it isn't like that. The fantasy, romance and the suspense of the plot are excellently balanced against one another. I highly recommend it and book 2 will be an auto-buy.
I kept trying to give this book a chance. I got through chapter 8 but ended up putting this book down in disgust. The reviewer(s) who claim that the heroine is a "strong female lead character" are exaggerating. So far, through chapter 8, she is nothing but a hapless victim, confused, and rather dull-witted. Even by chapter 8, there is absolutely no hint regarding what the story is actually about, not one secret revealed to identify any of the other characters' roles, or where the story is going. The reader is left frustrated that nothing has happened yet except the main character keeps getting attacked by everyone else, with all of the other characters accusing her of being in league with the villain, for what appears to be no purpose. It is not a good example of suspense but, rather, a plot line that doesn't appear to be going anywhere.
Visiting Ireland, I learned that there is more to that beautiful country than meets the eye. Hiking in a sheep field with my friends, we came upon a stone ruin hidden in the grass, a nearly perfect circle of stones. A faerie circle, my friend told me, and I laughed. Later that night, the hostel-keeper treated us to a host of tales about the Fae--not the light subject I imagined, but a dark and complicated mythology that seems to lurk behind all Irish story-telling, from Yeats to the kindly old man in the pub. Halverson treats readers to a story that explores these dark corners of Irish culture, introducing the casual romance reader to deep and complex set of myths and characters that will challenge the concept of "fantasy" and keep at least this reader coming back for more.

Like the myths that inspire the author, Through the Veil is dark and often violent. The expert world-building and larger-than-life characters put the reader in the center of the action, greedily turning page after page until the end. The female lead, Elizabeth Tanner, is smart, strong, and complicated, and she is not afraid of her flaws. Despite a very engaging male romantic lead in Finn, I found myself gravitating toward the wide range of interesting female characters, who are nuanced and deep with complicated relationships that the author develops very well. In future installments, I hope to learn more of Una's story in particular. I love stories of women helping women, especially in a genre crowded with characters who wait passively for a man to save them.

Ultimately, this is not just a book for romance readers. It's smart, funny, dark, terrifying, edgy, and hot. I can't wait for the next installment!

Pro-tip Be sure to book mark the Irish language pronunciation guide at the end -- the spellings are not phonetic in the way a typical American reader might imagine.
This book has everything I want. Fantasy. Fae. Fighting. Fornication. Fist-pumping moments. Feelings. And Feminism.

It feels criminal to have read something that probably took the author 2 years to write and edit, and probably an adulthood getting the education to write, in 1 day. But I did. I couldn't put it down.

Loved the relationship between the two MCs, and the many many layers between them. Love the ensemble of supporting characters. World building was masterful. I always felt like I was there, like I could see the different realms.

My favorite things about the book are the wordsmithing and the seamless way Irish mythology is brought to life. I didn't have to know anything beforehand, yet I understood every part of the world Halverson brought to life. The prose is riveting with both the author's and the character's voice jumping off the page.

Buy this. Read it. You'll thank me later.
